The QBC Veterinary system is a registered trademerk of IDEXX Laboratories who sells it. In some ways, veterinarians have a more difficult time than physicians - their patients can't talk! To compensate for this, lab tests are very helpful, but prior to our developing the QBC technology, there was no practical way for veterinarians to obtain blood counts while they were examining the animal, and test results returned after several days were often not helpful.
We discovered that, although there are substantial differences between the blood cell sizes of different animal species, within a species the sizes were similar enough so that setting constants for each animal type allows the QBC sytem to be used for any vertebrate. Our invention describes a reader where the animal species can be selected so that the appropriate results may be calculated.
This
is our "largest" patient, a
beluga whale at the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, CT. The QBC can also
be used on the penguins, seals and dolphins, although its primary
use is for companion animals.
