The DST products are so sensitive that they will turn color if there is even a single bacterium in the entire sample. This approach is excellent if one is testing for the presence or absence (P/A testing) of an organism, but it doesn't tell you how many organisms there are. The Quantitray, also sold by IDEXX Laboratories, solves this problem in a unique and simple way. A sample is mixed with the DST reagents and poured into a special bag which separates the mixture into a number of smaller, separate compartments which are hermetically sealed off from each other. This way, any organisms in the sample are segregated into their own separate compartments, and after the usual incubation, the number of compartments which have changed color are counted, giving the number of organisms per sample. This invention is widely used to monitor the purity of waste water and recreational waters.
