EnteroAlert is another defined substrate technology sold by IDEXX Laboratories which is specifically designed to look for Enterococci, which are bacteria present in waste or recreational waters when they are contaminated by sewage. In the past, after a sewage spill into a river, pond or beach, it took skilled microbiologists three or more days to test for the organism, during which time the water was unavailable for recreation. This delay cost communities millions of tourist dollars and ruined many people's vacations. Now, with EnteroAlert, the test can be performed by almost anybody, overnight. Most state and municipalities use this test for their recreational water testing. This is yet another example of a simple solution which saves time, money and the public's health.
