Principals...

We are physicians and scientists who found novel ways to solve important problems encountered in the course of our work, and we successfully patented and licensed those solutions. Our particular expertise is in diagnostic devices, with special emphasis on medical point-of-care testing and microbiological monitoring of food and water. Collectively, our licensed products have generated over a billion dollars in sales. Products based on our inventions have been or are being sold by Becton Dickinson and Company, IDEXX Laboratories, Tyco Corporation, Medical Technology Inc., Access Medical, and Beckman Coulter. We have recently formed a new company, QDx, Inc., to commercialize some of our newer technology.

In 1975, Dr. Levine had a flourishing practice in Internal Medicine and an intractable problem; it was impossible to obtain immediate laboratory tests on his sick patients, particularly hematolologic data. He introduced himself to Dr. Wardlaw, who had designed several instruments for the clinical laboratories at Yale, and they met in a local restaurant to see if they could solve this problem. They sought to invent systems that were as simple to operate as a toaster - the sample goes in, and the finished information comes out. The results of that collaboration can be seen on another page, and their accomplishments have been recognized by the Yale University School of Medicine as important advances.

As amateur inventors, we found it very difficult to get started. Our experience and knowledge gained over the past quarter century can help you.

R.A.L.Dr. Robert A. Levine is a Clinical Professor of Laboratory Medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine and a practicing internist andendocrinologist. His areas of interest include developing point ofcare diagnostics for both human and veterinary medicine. He has invented tests for performing complete blood counts, tests for cancer of colon, and for the diagnoses of malaria and other hematoparasitic diseases. He has also developed expert systems for the interpretation of hematologic, thyroid and allergy testing. His curriculum vitae includes over 200 United States and foreign patents as well as many publications in the field of general medicine and laboratory medicine.
